HYDRAULIC HOIST OPERATES AT CRYOGENIC TEMPERATURES

The lifting specialists J D Neuhaus have carried out successful tests at a cryogenic test chamber in the Netherlands for operation of one of their hydraulic monorail hoists at -45°C temperature. Although initially specified for on and offshore operations, the hoists could be used in other polar operations such as scientific land stations, together with commercial fishing, expedition and processing vessels.

The JDN standard range of air or hydraulically operated hoists are ATEX rated and insensitive to both humidity and dust while operating within a temperature range of -20°C to +70°C. However, following inquiries regarding a specialised oil and gas lifting application taking place under extreme arctic conditions, an adapted EH-20 monorail hoist was put on extended testing at minus 45°C. To ensure smooth starting at such an extreme temperature, the hoist was fitted with a pre-heating device to raise the temperature of the drives to -25°C before operation. The hoist was also equipped with cryogenic hydraulic oil to ensure efficient operation within a temperature range of -45°C to +40°C.

The standard EH range of hydraulic monorail hoists available from JDN can be supplied for lift capacities from 20 to 100 tonnes. Controlled load lowering is also available in the event of oil supply failure. They are ideal for applications involving explosive atmospheres, and are fitted with sensitive, infinitely variable speed control of lifting/lowering and travel operations. They feature fully enclosed and highly robust gear motors, with extremely low noise emissions and integrated overload protection.
